Charley accepted Mark’s hand as he helped her out of his automobile. She stepped out of the way as he pushed the door closed and pulled her coat tighter to protect herself against the elements. The promise of spring earlier in the week had only been Mother Nature teasing them. Today the sun shone brightly, but there was a frosty chill in the air, especially so close to the waterfront.

“I really think it would be better if I spoke with Ted Cannon alone,” she said for probably the tenth time since he’d insisted on driving them to the shipbuilding yard where Dan’s father had his office. “He’s an old family friend and is likely to be more forthcoming if it’s only me.”

“I need to be there,” Mark replied cryptically, again for probably the tenth time.

“Fine.” Charley knew when to stop beating a dead horse. She glanced up at the modest building. The company had been founded by Dan’s great-grandfather on his mother’s side. It had done very well during the war, but Dan had confided to her that business was slowing down somewhat. But then, it had been the same in the years following the Great War. It would take time for the company to transition back to peacetime pursuits.

Ted Cannon greeted Charley with a smile and a warm hug. He threw a more cautious look toward Mark. Charley made the introductions but couldn’t soften the reality that she had brought a police officer to ask him some questions.

“Are you here on business, too?” Ted turned to Charley, a hurt look in his steel-blue eyes. He was a big man with a broad, friendly face, much like his son’s. His once-blond hair had almost disappeared, leaving a few greying wisps circling his skull, like the laurel wreath she’d seen in paintings of Roman emperors.

“Nothing for the Trib,” she said.

“All right,” he said, giving Mark one more critical look before circling around to sit behind the enormous oak desk Charley remembered using as a fort when she and Dan would visit as children. He folded his hands against his chest and leaned back in his chair. “Shoot. What can I do for you?”

Mark went on the offensive before Charley had a chance to speak.

“I understand you were at the Richardson Laboratory this morning.”

Ted blanched but didn’t deny it. “So?”

“What do you know about the woman whose body you viewed?”

“What’s all this about?” He turned to Charley.

“Please answer,” Mark barked.

“I am not answering anything until I get more information.” He sat forward and gave Mark a glare that would have crippled a less confident man. “Am I under suspicion of something? Do I need a lawyer?”

Charley opened her mouth to reply but Mark spoke first. “Do you think you need a lawyer?”

Charley had had enough. “Seriously, Mark—I mean Detective Spadina. I don’t think we need to be quite so confrontational.” She ignored the murderous glare Mark threw her way and spoke to Ted. “We are simply looking for more information on the woman.
